Desires of a Broken Spirit

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

1 John‬ ‭2:15-17‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Interesting that the love of the world is defined as lust and pride. But the actions in of themselves are not wrong. It is the object of their attention. When we desire God and seek his kingdom when we look not with human eyes but spiritual eyes when we boast in the Lord it is good.

What does my heart long for?

What are the objects of my affections?

Is God first?

The world continues to push its form of spiritual formation. It is promoting the next gadget, the security of wealth, the sexy person. But more than these it is forming our spirits to desire, ‘what I want’, to ‘feel what I feel’, to ‘listen to my truth’.

These actions are worshipping a false god. In fact this false god is the original false god that twisted our relationship with creation and the one true God. This false god is not Satan, but is me.

It is my desire to determine right and wrong; It is my desire to define my identity; It is my desire to have things for security and pleasure; It is my desire be seen, respected, and loved by others; these misplaced desires lead our hearts to worship the most evil of the false gods – me. For when that worship is true there is no evil we won’t do to meet the insatiable desires of the broken spirit.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
